Every Day I will Bless Thee
I will bless thy name forever and ever. Every day, I will bless thee. (Ps. 145:1-2)
Ps. 145, 67:3, 77:11-14, 95:2-3, 104:1-5; Deut. 3:24, Mal. 1:11; I Peter 2:9
What Is God Saying?
Psalm 145 begins the most sustained and focused paean of praise in Scripture. Each psalm (146-150) begins and ends with "Praise the Lord." We would do well to start and end every day the same way. "Every day, I will bless thee." The expression bless thee is equivalent to praise thee or extol thee.
This psalm begins and ends with an individual: "I will extol thee my God" (I), and "My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord" (21). The body of the song addresses "coming generati0ns" (4), "people abundantly uttering the memory of God's great goodness" (7), "all of God's works and all of God's people" (10), and finally, there is the assurance that God "is near to all who call upon him."
How Does This Apply To Us?
Perhaps praise is the missing factor in many of our lives. Endless streams of images and content desensitize us to lies, violence, and exploitation. The worst in human nature is trivialized. We desperately need to be lifted into thoughts about God's quiet and eternal majesty, to praise Him for His never-failing goodness. God is King. He is in control. His goodness is forever. We dwell on His majesty and the truth that He "preserves all that love him" (Ps. 145:20).
Pray With Me
To the end of my understanding, God and King, all that You are and all You have created, give me a reason to "bless thy name forever and ever.” I will have the joy of praising that name to eternity and in eternity. O Lord, thank you that I can bless Your name every day of my life. Fill my heart that I may praise You even when day no longer follows day. I will keep on blessing Your name in the forever of Your holy presence and the radiant company of my risen Lord.
In that name which is worthy to receive all blessing and honor, forever and ever, and day by day. Amen.
Moving On In The Life of Prayer
Prayer begins, continues, and ends with praise. God alone is to be worshiped. God alone has the first and final word, and He, above all, deserves our praise.
