Every Word of God Proves True

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. (Proverbs 30:5)

Prov. 30:1-5; Ps. 119:40; Isa 55:10-11; Mt. 24:35; Jn. 17:17; Eph. 6:13-17; II Tim 3:16-17; Heb. 4:12-13

What Is God Saying?

Although Proverbs has a general theme (wisdom), it is difficult, impossible, to discover a continuing line of thought. Chapters 1-9 expound on the importance and blessing of wisdom. Chapters 10-30 are a collection of sayings. Like beads on a necklace, they are separate, yet each is touched by the beauty of truth and connected by the thread of wisdom. These scattered sayings radiate from God's teaching and purpose in all the relationships of life-home, work, leisure times, in everything a person says or does or thinks. The one consistent theme is stated early: "The fear of the Lord (trust and reverence, not fright) is the beginning of wisdom" (Prov. 1:7). Everything flows from that, though the individual sayings often seem to be as unrelated as stones in a stream. Like stepping stones, these sayings can guide us in the dangerous currents of life to God. Although unrelated, they are part of God's plan for life with him.

How Does This Apply To Us?

Agur (probably a friend of Solomon) admits to being weary, even ready to die, but God will protect those who trust him. Let us take that promise into our lives today. "Every word of God proves true." He will defend us in our battle against evil. If we dare to take a stand for truth, he will provide a shield against the false. In any crisis that comes, long-anticipated or like a sudden ambush, let us turn to his Word and trust in his Word. It always proves to be true.

Pray With Me

Lord, your every word proves true. This is my light in the dark valley. This is your strength made perfect in my weakness. This is the joy of knowing that there is always something incomparably wonderful ahead. This is my confidence that you are always at work in my life until Christ is formed in me.

When my heart is heavy and the path ahead seems steep, I turn to your Word. I trust in your word. “I can do all things through Chnst who strengthens me." When I grow weary and life becomes a ceaseless round of pointless activity, I turn to your Word, I trust in your Word, and it proves to be true, "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion on the day of Jesus Christ." When the flaming darts of the evil one fall like rain around me, I turn to your Word, I trust in your Word, and it proves to be true, "Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one."

"Every word of God proves true." This enables me to go on when I am tempted to stop. This makes me pause when I am impatient to run on. This brings stillness when my heart is troubled. This kindles hope when my heart has grown cold. Every word proves true--every promise proves true, every warning proves true, every abomination proves true, every teaching proves true, every word proves true. In this confidence, let me find in your word a shield to keep me from all that is evil and to protect me in all that is good.

In the name of Jesus Christ, in whom all the promises of God are true. Amen.

Moving On In The Life of Prayer

Prayer is first realizing the greatness of God; he cannot be described or defined. How beautifully the Living Bible puts it, "Who else holds the wind in his fists and wraps the oceans m his cloak? Who but God created the world?" (Prov. 30:4-5). The essence of prayer is simply trusting in the Word of God. Let others try vainly to explain him, or explain him away. Prayer is leaning on one whose every word proves true.
